Description
A large bowl by Japanese duo Kenichi and Minako Fujii. This vessel has been hand-turned on the lathe by Husband Keichi before his wife Minkao applies the urushi coating, which is using the makiji method. She uses a combination of urushi and charcoal powder, layering in this way creates a rougher surface texture that’s brown in colour.
Lacquer is a traditional coating that has been used in Japan and the Far East for thousands of years. The sap is collected from the urushi tree, which once harvested and matured over a number of years can provide protection to any wooden object.
